the word “zellige” in arabic means “polished stone” or “tile” because of the shiny, brilliance that each tile offers. the unique surface, edge and color variation of zellige has made it much sought after by designers and homeowners seeking the most authentic expression of handmade tile.  the creation of zellige tiles originated in morocco in the 10th century and quickly spread across the world. at that time, these tiles used to be mainly white and brown in color.  as the tile became more popular the color palette then expanded. In the 14th century blue, green, and yellow were added, and years later red became more commonly used. 

today, there are endless combinations of moroccan tile patterns and endless colors.  the production of zellige remains unchanged. each tile is made in fes, morocco, completely by hand, from forming and pressing the clay body to glazing, cutting and packing.  our zel collection offers classic zellige shapes as well as new offerings, all sure to bring unmatched character to any space.
